Emmarie arrived at the grocery store. And saw a box of puppies near the entrance. They were with a man who appeared homeless. He was sitting in a fold up chair that you see at parties and events, holding a sign that says “Puppies ,FREE, $50 rehoming fee”. She stopped on her way in to pet them, then on her way out to get the story…
“Hi. These puppies are for sale?”, said Emmarie judgementally.
“No. They’re free. The $50 rehoming is to ensure they go to a loving, capable home.”, with a smug smirk on his face, attempting to look sincere, while thinking they’re convincing someone.
“Mm hm. That’s selling sir. What would you say if I told you I’ll take them all for free, right now. I have references and proof I can give them a good home. I work at the humane society as a lead kennelist where I frequently adopt and own my home, land, and its fenced in. I also own and run single handedly, a rescue shelter set up on my property and it’s temperature controlled, they get love, affection, and attention everyday, have plenty of supplies, are very happy, get professional training, expert vet care, and so on… What would you say to that?”
“I’d say you can leave. $50 rehoming fee.”
“That’s what I thought. You are exactly who I thought you were. Have a wonderful day.”
“You too Karen. I mean, lady.”
Emmarie scuffs and walks away angrily. She knows she looks like some animal advocate Karen. But some of these people (a few who refer to themselves as breeders luring in those who shop not adopt) and don’t fix their animals… and so many end up back in shelters and get surrendered or abandoned then end up in these shelters and eventually killed (sugar coated as euthanized because, there’s just not room and everyone wants them as puppies. She had to at least try to make a difference. She often adopted the ones on the euthanization list specifically, where she works because she comes attached and can’t let that happen. That’s why she set up the rescue shelter. She’s licensed and permitted. And she’ll never let anyone ignore her wishes again. She’s empowered and strong. Yes, this new me feels great. I can get used to this.
