“Hey Mrs. Smith. I got some interesting news today.”, Emmarie said intriguingly.
“Oh really. Tell me about that, Emmarie.”, the therapist said curiously.
“I have started these acting classes and we had our first play recently. And I was approached by an agent who said he could make me the next Jennifer Lawrence.”
“Wow. That’s a big promise. How do you feel about that?”
“I don’t know. I love to act. But more as a hobby. Making it a career and going big with it, is more than I was prepared to put into it.”
“I can understand that. And making it big like that is difficult and rare. And even if you were interested, you’d have to be aware it’s going to take hard work and dedication and be prepared to not get there or to fail many times before you do.”
“Oh I know. My whole life has been like that.”, Emmarie said laughing awkwardly.
“But I’m not sure that’s what I want for my life anyway. I’m a really private and reserved person. And having me on display like that isn’t really something I think I would enjoy or be able to handle anyway. But it is nice to hear someone even thinks I could be THAT good. Even if there’s a chance I wouldn’t make it. Someone thinks I COULD. And that at least feels good. You know?”, Emmarie added.
“I do know. And I agree. And I think it’s valid to feel that way. And I definitely would too.”
Emmarie showed up to class the next week with a little more confidence than usual. And was ready to tackle the next story they were scheduled to portray. She would take on any character she was assigned, big or small, and do her best to absolutely crush it. Pour her soul into becoming who she was depicting. Show her teacher she wasn’t just the quiet girl who followed directions well. But the girl the agent saw that day. A force to be reckoned with. A powerful beautiful disaster growing into something worth knowing. Not just damaged goods. But a priceless jewel, shining from the rocks she was thrown violently into to find her own way out of. And that she did. With perseverance.
