Neither does Profound Intellectual Disability or Profound Expressive Receptive Language Disorder… he can learn. Just at a slower rate and in different ways. And what he needs to focus on in school may differ quite a bit from the average kids. Like in Social Studies we’re learning to recognize Community Helpers, Science to identify Body Parts and commonly seen animals, Language Arts point at our name in a field of simple words and spot correct letters when asked, and then Math to know our numbers 0-9 on sight. Then for his extracurriculars… he’s working to use his AAC for communication, gain coping skills during meltdowns or when we’re overwhelmed with intense emotions, and how to safely interact and play with animals and other children (especially those that are smaller than us). He’s not yet picking up on most of it yet but in homeschool we are working very hard and have made slight progress with the animals and other children and a little in AAC… so that’s rewarding to see and helps me keep going!
